The relative age effect in ADHD is an example of a bias known as the representativeness heuristic. It's easier to compare all kidney gardeners with one set of so-called normal behaviors than it is to figure out where each individual kid may be along the typical developmental timeline. Doctors have to pull together whatever data we have and arrive at an answer using a combination of conscious reasoning and subconscious pattern recognition.
