The Origins of Slavery in Athens
Most slaves from the late Archaic to the Classical periods forward were not Greek, but were foreign. Names given as slaves often had a geographical link and nationality was significant criterion for major purchasers. The existence of Greek slaves was a constant source of discomfort for free Greeks; enslavement of cities was also controversial practice.
