The importance of networking can't be underestimated. All the people you meet on your program are all going to move on and do things. And then maybe they'll end up going somewhere that you want to do a postdoc, things like that. I think also don't be afraid to just go talk to people at conferences. Adam is always looking for talented D-field students and postdocs.
