Intro

This chapter explores the launch of DeepSeq R1, an open-source reasoning model from a Chinese startup that competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT-01 at a lower cost. It also examines how US export controls may be unintentionally spurring innovation among Chinese startups, offering new opportunities for resource-limited researchers, especially in the global south.
