The Importance of Narrative in Game Design
I think that kind of narrative is what makes distilling components of game design so incredibly difficult. Like when I think about the XCOM stuff, I always feel like, well, the randomness in XCOM is feels weird because you've spent a really long time thinking of a plan and making a bunch of decisions. That's not a useful lens for interrogating randomness. The terms expectations and time are pretty useful.
