The religionist who won't lie or cheat or steal behaves that way because he is decided by his own judgment. But if he truly embraced religion, he would readily steal and kill if he believed God wanted him to. Similarly, if a follower of environmentalism values human welfare, he does so not because of his ideology but in spite of it. If the environmentalist believes there is an intrinsic value to untouched nature, then man's well-being cannot be a value. And now we're up to point four, the cognitive distortions resulting from this whole devious process.
