The Environmental Impacts of Chromium Tanners

Chromium tanning which is the most widely used still process is extremely toxic. In places that aren't so highly regulated, that is a huge environmental issue. I'm in thought with why we chose to use vegetable tanner over chrome as more to do with it being a finite resource that we're mining. But if you're not taking that leather back at the end of its life, when it rides a grade, that chromium will still remain. That's the antithesis of what leather is meant to be. It's meant to go back into the earth that it came from.
