Lincoln's Letter to the Working Men of Manchester
Lincoln wrote back to the free trade halls in Manchester on New Year's Eve 1862. It is an extraordinary move by Lincoln at one of the busiest periods of his presidency, he says. One has to understand that emancipation was extremely unpopular in the U.S. There were many in the northern states who did not support Lincoln's policy. And I suspect he was writing back to the folks in Manchester in order to galvanize that support.
