The Role of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in ARDS

When the clinical situation deteriorates or the patient just isn't getting better, the panel recommended referral for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation or ECMO. It is quite plausible that some interventions work equally well for anyone with any kind of ARDS, while other interventions will only work in certain forms of ARDS. That's an area of ongoing research trying to understand other different subtypes of AR DS.
