The Battle of Vicksburg
General Ulysses Grant's plan to take Vicksburg is foiled by a series of small skirmishes. The Union Army moves quickly across Mississippi, forcing the Confederate army there to retreat. A single brigade of about 3,200 Confederates ambush General James McPherson's Union lines and buy more time to build defenses at Jackson. "I can't believe I'm going to say this again, but they need to move quickly if this plan is going to work," says historian David Frum.
