Evolutionary Biologists Lose Confidence in the Material Link Between the Brain and the Mind

After Darwin's death in 1882, evolutionary biologists appear to lose confidence in the material link between the brain and the mind. How does this bizarre, limpid, mysterious, eerie consciousness emerge from bazillions of neurons? And they didn't have an answer to it then. So they began to wonder, well, perhaps it's not a material thing at all. Perhaps there is some spiritual, non-materialist explanation. Now those explanations weren't any good either because they had no proof for them and they didn't actually help much. In a way, we're still there, except I think most people would say, well, you know what, I do know something about consciousness.
