There was a lot of criticism at the time by folks like me and the George W. Bush administration of how the George H.W. Bush administration had handled Iraq. Brent Scowcroft warned against this invasion, which he wrote could become an open-ended military occupation that might wind up creating more terrorists than it eliminated. I wanted to foster the debate, but I didn't give his argument serious consideration.
