The Decline of the Church in the West

Darben McCullough says in his book on the Reformation that the 20th century, he's speaking of the decline in the West. What has happened between the Reformation and now and why are churches in the West declining? He says they've given up on their own doctrines. They don't stand their ground on doctrine at all because they just decide it really doesn't matter. This is the result of abandoning the word, of abandoning word centric Christianity.
