The Importance of Mutual Submission
Paul's not writing into a vacuum and he's not instructing a church in a vacuum. The first century was a patriarchal society. Women didn't have standing under the law. They couldn't be witnesses in court. She was a husband's possession. Greek men expected their wives to run the home, to care for the legitimate children,. while he was off finding pleasure and happiness with prostitutes or other parts of society. Fidelity was a concept that barely existed. Female babies were abandoned more frequently than men - often raised to be prostitutes.
