In the wild, nearly 100% of virgin female mice readily kill mice pups produced by other females. Daileen Diu and her team have published evidence for what they think is the specific neural circuit in the mouse brain responsible for this switch. The team were able to artificially activate regions of the brain linked to the MPOA using several techniques including optogenetics. They found that by activating a group of cells in an area called the bed nucleus of striatuminalis, the team could consistently, and drastically, change mouse behaviour towards mouse pups.
