The Sequoia's Special Defenses

Sequoias have been able to survive a lot of things other trees can't, including insects. The chemicals in this sap and elsewhere throughout the tree repel insects and fungi. These chemicals also do something else really cool: They give the sequoia its striking red bark. But lately, these defenses haven't been enough. Climate change is creating catastrophic fires that can kill these trees.
