If you want to really understand Japan, you've got to learn to read the script. It tells you a huge amount about the country and about the culture because of these ideograms. The way you distinguish one word from another is really from the kanji. So I decided that actually I need that as an adult. And so I came up with something called the major system, which was a medieval method of remembering numbers. Each Kanji kind of has a story to it. But this method put another layer on, which was really interesting. Hone tatimai means 'to show the world what you want to show'
