Nostalgia and the Civil War
Nostalgia was spreading alongside imperialism at a time when European powers were sending men across the world to expand their empires. Western physicians were diagnosing nostalgia in British soldiers fighting to colonize India and in French soldiers fighting the Napoleonic Wars. Nostalgia also showed up years later in American soldiers during the Civil War.
