The welfare state has long served a kind of disciplinary function in terms of ensuring adherence to a limited set of norms and standards. And the caring agencies of the state exert a normative force, and I'm seeing sort of caring in heavily inverted commutives. We need to talk about how we help and support each other to run against the tides that are trying to get us to care in ways that are fundamentally uncaring, and possibly even toxic.
