Raymond spitey joined the r a f in april 19 forty, but was apparently considered too old, at 27, to be a fight pilot. His letters detail his struggle to find a way into training. He and claude millington were sent to fulcon field, arizonas where they learned how to fly all year round. They also befriended a family of farmers called the martins who would take them hunting and fishing. Ray guessed that their presence was helping the martin's cope with their bereavement. The two young men successfully completed their training before being released as illegal aliens by border officials. And it is here that my grandad has spent the last six years
