The idea of foundlings being left on convent porches is a cliche for a reason that was, it goes back to ancient Rome. There was a particular column in the Roman forum where unwanted babies could be left. If you didn't see anything you liked, those babies were just left to die. They came back, I think, they disappeared for centuries.
