The History of the Janissaries
Janissaries were Christian children who had been kidnapped or sold by their parents. They were sold to the Ottomans, converted to Islam and raised as soldiers. Janissaries would meet in coffee houses discussing politics effectively. The ruling powers did not like that so they began to crack down on all these coffee houses.
