The Importance of Cutting
The story took me a long time to get through just the first third of the chapter, but that's the story. So basically nobody knows what to do with this throughout the history of interpretation. Why is David depicted here is tearing apart his men with words? Well, there's at least a couple strong possibilities in my mind. It's also possible that this is a literary word play or semantic word play connected to the theme of cutting throughout the story.
