Is the Great Depression a Good Idea?

The Great Depression in the US was unique. It was the only time when there was a significant reduction in real output that was associated with deflation. Most historical periods of deflation have been driven by positive productivity growth. And so, you know, what's that old line about for a guy with a hammer? And everything looks like a nail? So they saw that as the problem. But I do think getting drawn into that, that was a fundamental mistake.
