The Relationship Between Liberation Theology and the Catholic Church

The relationship between liberation theology and the Catholic Church is complicated. Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger who became Pope Benedict spent a lot of time severely disciplining liberation theology. A lot of progressive bishops also tried to defend themselves in their theologians, which was pretty ugly. For what it's worth, Pope Francis is very different from all that though; he did have some kind of like progressive things to say but not as far as liberation theology.
