The Importance of Self-Reported Empathy
The ability to accurately detect when somebody else is in distress is if anything a more true form of empathy. Self-reported empathy, it has all the weaknesses of other self-report measures and probably more than some because it's such a socially desirable construct. It seems to be more strongly predictive of behavior, for example, than self-reported empathy.
