I have met many people who feel a calling to write a book, but they often give up before writing even the first draft of the first chapter. Their belief that each sentence has to be perfect, or close to perfect, to be worthy of the page keeps them from even starting the process. I recommend they adopt a zero draft approach. Write a version of that first chapter that's so rough it wouldn't even qualify as a first draft. And remind yourself that every great achievement is rubbish at the beginning, every one of them. Even rubbish words are more powerful than a blank page. By embracing imperfection, by having the courage to be rubbish, we can begin.
Effortless: Chapter Nine
It all starts with a simple principle: not everything has to be so hard. This special episode is an excerpt from the audiobook, narrated by Greg. It explains the importance of embracing the rubbish in order to learn, grow, and make progress on what's essential.
- Effortless is available for purchase, as a book or audiobook. (Audio excerpted courtesy of Penguin Random House Audio from Effortless by Greg McKeown, read by the author and available wherever audiobooks are sold).
