The Deterioration of Form in Art Criticism
In a small community the relationship of the creative artist to the recognition of his work by the community is as it were immediate in a large society. The individual with as little formal agony as possible renders something and then is criticized by newspaper people who themselves find themselves baffled before anything really complex. I would like to mention Nietzsche's statements about romantic and classic art. These were the terms in his day that were most important in art criticism. There is the romanticism that smashes the contemporary form because there is so much real power and energy there that it has to create a form beyond these. But it does create such a form.
