The first written reports of what may have been milk sickness date back to before the Revolutionary War in North Carolina. Homesteaders and other new arrivals tried to turn forest into farmlands and their grazing animals ate plants that they would not have encountered otherwise. This also means that milk sickness was directly tied to the United States westward expansion and the forced displacement of indigenous peoples from their ancestral homelands.
