The Soviets' Paranoia of the Fall of 83
The Soviets interpreted Star Wars as the United States Initiative to build a defensive shield around the US and its allies. They saw all of this as adding up to Operation Ryan is real, they're intending to launch a first strike. The general tenor in the Kremlin was one of paranoia and dismay. This did not extend to Europe or anywhere else. It was just in the Far East that lasted from April of 1983 right up through the Korean airline shoot down on the 1st of September 1983.
