There was a path dependency to these things that was quite powerful, i think, by the time each came into office. I am sceptical that an indefinite, small scale commitment would have been possible. There's going to be no circumstance where you see people being lifted off the roof of an embassy of the united states in afghanistan. It's not at all comparable. Of course, the only response we can say is ouch. A smart people i respect have commented that this will tarnish baden's legacy. Others have gone further and said that it will undermine the u.
