I think that using the internet is a life skill these days in the same way that tying your shoelaces was when we were kids. You just need to learn how to deal with the problems as they come up and you need to be taught that. Having piehole there in the back to know that they're not actually going to go to muckyjpegs.com is quite reassuring. I've done exactly that for some of the suicide chat forums just because I can't even think about them getting to that stuff. It would be pretty reliable and it can take out some of the harmful content but not all of it.
