The Immovable Foundation of the Church

The controversy around this text is that within the Catholic Church the focus is on who Jesus is talking to and the revelation that God has given to Peter. This kind of sets up for within Catholicism kind of the papal primacy, the idea of the pope as a continuation of Peter's apostolic commission here. Protestants have always held tenaciously to this idea that it's not talking about Peter, he's talking about what Peter said. I would argue that both are right at a certain level, not in a pope sense but he is talking not just about whatPeter said, he is talking about Peter because Peter is the founder of the church.
