The Basic Intelligibility of the Doctrine
Purgatory is a kind of intermediate state before the arrival at heaven, during which time one needs fill up what is lacking to his or her deeds. The gospels describe sin against the holy spirit as a sin which can neither be pardoned here on earth or in heaven. So there you have a communicated by the sacred text, a belief in some form of remission that need take place after death.
