Living Shorelines for Georgia's High Energy Coast
On Sappalo a natural shoreline might prevent some of that erosion by rebuilding land and habitat instead of using hard engineering like concrete seawalls which coastal communities often use. The idea here is that you stabilize the eroding bank with mostly natural materials and at the same time you are improving habitat. With the oyster show it recruits new oysters which over time create a three-dimensional reef which house lots of different invertebrates and fish. Behind that native plants will help to stabilize that portion of the bank to also provide habitat for many species as you can see as we stand out here and observe.
