There is an imaginary sense of fighting a war that's giving to people this sense of meaning and community. That ultimately leads to real violence because what you start to assume is that everything that I believe, it's a threat to me if there are people who don't want those things. A friend of mine and I, he works on a lot of religious liberty cases. We were talking about religious freedom in this country. And I said one of the really alarming warning signs that I saw several years ago is when there were people who would say on some issue or the other, well yeah, religious liberty, but that's just playing defense.
