In the book you frequently make the point that innovators need to step back and see the big picture or the whole system. Dr. Taguchi would always say engineers when they focus on problems only they would have job security because all they do is play whack-a-mole. He came up with a concept called robustness which is how do I set up my control factors in a way that make me least sensitive to the noise factors I can't control? It's part of the Japanese philosophy one of the things I learned when I was young.
