An objective for me is to weigh 170 pounds. When I get on the scale and the numbers are going up, there is nothing that I can do in that moment to change that number. That is a lagging indicator. It reflects the effort, the discipline I've put in or not over however long it's been since I last got on the scale. The leading indicator is the thing that will actually get me towards that healthy weight.
