Listeria Monocytogenes in Rabbits
Bacterium monocytogenes is a bacterium that has been around since at least World War I. It was named in honor of Joseph Lister, who died from sepsis after being infected by the bacteria. The researchers were able to culture it and then carried out experiments on young rabbits where they found an infection hit them particularly badly. But unlike other infectious diseases, this one didn't lead to widespread recognition until recently.
