Your and my DNA is 3 billion base pairs long. A typical coronavirus of maybe 20 or 30,000 base pairs will get the odd one or two changes that occur during each replication. That's incidentally why viruses mutate fairly quickly. Biochemists have beautifully revealed for us over the last 40 or 50 years how this happens.
