How Did Ultra Running Become a Sport?

In the seventies, 100 k walking events sprung up in europe. They didn't call it ulta running. Back then, ted corbett of new york an, i think it was around late fifties, he came up with that term, ultra marithon. But ams just known as a long distance running. Over the years, the sport has grown, you know, expedentially. And and i don't know ifwe're reaching a plateau now or not. I think it's still growing quite a bit. Why does it attract so many people? I mean, from a historian point of view, why do people put themselves through these stupid, stupid events
