Ordiric says William sent a messenger to York, carrying instructions that the garrison stationed in the two recently constructed castles were to be quote, on their guard against the enemy. Ordiric: The men manning the castles at York actually had enough time to send a reply and they told William that they wouldn't need his support. Just down the way were Edgar the Athling, Earl Walthioff, Seward, and a whole variety of other powerful English nobles.
