Redefining the Metaverse: Beyond Gaming and Into Communication

yeah, that was sort of an observation that I made. Because it's always struck me and this is even back when the internet was first happening. I kind of talked about for example, you know, this was still when people didn't even back in the early 90s, people didn't really grok. What was different about the internet? The information people highway. I said, Google doesn't happen. I literally had, I forget what year it was, but a debate with Richard Stallman about how, I said, look, even if Amazon gave away their source code and you had it, you wouldn't have Amazon because it's not actually... He's like, well, it doesn't run on my machine so it doesn't matter morally. I know. I had no idea where I was going. You're missing the whole point. There's a new paradigm happening where these things are happening in the space between... The internet happens between my browser and someone else's server, and it's this shared space. And then if you just look at the way to properly think about the metaverse, the metaverse is just sort of maybe a more vivid version of the internet. But I always sort of thought that it actually, you know, there was sort of a way that it was sort of they were trying to imagine it as out of gaming when I thought that's the nation place you would go, right, that it should be imagined out of communication. And, you know, and the example I think I gave in that piece that I wrote was of, you know, my wife and I would basically do morning exercises with a friend who had a peloton subscription. And she would basically, you know, play these exercise videos, you minute abs with Robin and whatever, strength training with Rad. And we would do every morning, we would do a half hour with Adder Robin. And so we have these virtual people who are just video avatars who are leading us in two different locations through an exercise routine. They go, why is that not the metaverse? And I thought, well, that's more metaverse than going into some dumb place where people are cartoon avatars. And so I guess I still think that, and I love what Phil Leibman was doing, where he was saying, how do we get more aliveness into Zoom and more interactivity? So I think that there's still some potential there that got lost. And I think it got lost because I don't think the metaverse was ever actually a thing. It was a ploy to convince people that there was some future value that Facebook should be given now. It was effectively a mind hack on the financial system rather than a real technology that they were trying to drive forward.
