Can We Choose What We Want as Conscious Beings?
I think that if things move to war, if things respond to stimuli, you can't really call that a decision. I'm not convinced that sometimes we can. It's the great Schopenhauer quote that begins my novel Turtles All the Way Down. Everyone can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills. But I don't know that we're going to come to better conclusions because it's not like we have that much new data. We've mostly been consciousnesses aware of our own consciousness the whole time.
