The cells that will make your brain are among the first to be set aside in development. Neurons start as cells that want to be neurons, but have not committed to what kind of neuron. Early progenitors' job is to just divide and make more; so, early on, they just divide. As development progresses, one of them will say, I'm ready to differentiate. They mature into becoming the kind of neuron you need.
