The futurists wanted to appeal to the working masses, so they chose variety theatre. They would deliberately try and provoke conflict with the audience. The actors on stage would start attacking each other, or hickling each other,. And then they'd start attacking the audience. So instead of simply sitting and admiring the spectacle of the art, you are now in chaos.
