You can see the green in a telescope because it's a green comet. Our retina has rods and cones and the rods are sensitive to shades of gray. The cones are sensitive to color, but they require higher intensity light in order to get triggered. So dim comets, no matter what color they are in a telescope, typically you don't notice that with your eyes unless you can see them through a big telescope.
