How to Listen to a Self-Injuring Person
If you get an over emotional response to someone who's self-harm, you're actually encouraging them. The person needs to be noticed and cared for all the time, not just when they self-harm. There should be no blame, no shame, they need opportunities to talk. Only learn and listen first before you start correcting. If the underlying causes are not addressed, making an individual stop self-harming may lead to even more destructive activities to relieve their unresolved emotions.
