The Difference Between Academic Writing and Non Academic Writing
I think of them as two different professions, and they are two different careers. Academic writing is supposed to speak to other academics. Criticism is not that. The benefit of being a critic is that even when you're writing for an institution that purportedly has a strong house style, as everyone claims the New Yorker does but it really doesn't. I try to meet the quota of a thousand words a day. Usually on days when I'm writing, I will try to write. Sometimes revising something will meet that quota for me. But usually I try to make it new and I usually do all of my reading at night after my kids go to sleep. So that's how I divide my
