The Battle of Fredericksburg
Lee and Jackson's audacious gamble had paid off But the attack came at a cost during the assault Jackson was mistakenly shot by his own men his arm had to be amputated. The Confederate army paid a high price for its victory Nearly 13,000 rebels were killed wounded or missing in battle more than a fifth of Lee's entire army lost their lives. On May 10th Stonewall Jackson died of pneumonia but Lee had secured his greatest and most improbable triumph.
